Help with Video Clips

Video clips show a blank black screen, do not play when clicked, or fail to display the player controls

Users of the Firefox web browser may need an updated version of the Microsoft® Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin.

  1. Go to the plugin download page at Port25.
  2. Click "Download Now!" You will be prompted to save a file.
  3. Save the file to your desktop.
  4. Once it has downloaded, run it, and the plugin will install.
  5. When the installation has finished, close and restart Firefox
  6. Click the File menu at the top of the Firefox window, and select Exit.
  7. When Firefox has completely closed, start Firefox up again.

For more information visit the Mozilla (Firefox) Support Site.

I'm browsing from a MacOS computer with Firefox or Safari and am having trouble with video playback

With some exceptions this site displays video clips in streaming Windows Media format (.wvx). Microsoft no longer supports Windows Media playback on MacOS PCs directly but you may play some Windows Media video using the free non-Microsoft Flip4Mac player. You can find it on the Telestream Flip4Mac site.

I receive prompts like "Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and plugins to run?" when trying to play video clips or Adobe Flash content on the site. What should I do?

Playback of video files and Adobe Flash media on this site require the use of ActiveX controls and plugins to run. If you wish to view these types of media, please accept the prompts to allow the controls and plugins to run.

Video is invisible or disappears when I click a control.

This is caused by a video acceleration problem. To fix:

  1. When the player is active, right-click on it and select 'Options...'
  2. At the bottom of the window should be a 'Video Acceleration' option. Change it from full to half by moving the slider.

The audio and video should now play properly.

When playing a video file I can only hear the sound but there is no picture.

Video seems to take a long time to start playback

To compensate for the different speeds of individuals' network connections, the brower must first download some of the video before it can begin playing. If your connection is slower it make take longer to start playback.

On very slow connections the video may "stutter" in mid-playback or stop completely while more data is downloaded. Playback should continue once a sufficient amount of video data has been downloaded.
